applied themselves primarily to the sculpture of wood and marble, cornices and sacred furni- drt
Bardonecchia is very rich in artistic evidence. An example is the ‘Melezet School’: a school
                                                    . The artists
of sculpture, art and architecture very well known between the 15 and 18
                                            th

shings part of which have been collected in the small museum of the Cappella del Carmine in
Melezet, such as the baldachin-shape shrine, dating back to the 14 th cent. , with the wood statue
of St. Sisto (15 th cent. ); three large wood statues (the ‘Madonna’, St. Peter, St. Paul) and a pain-
ting on wood dated late 1400 very appreciated for its vivacity of colours.
The Parrocchiale di Sant’Ippolito, rebuilt in the 1800, on the base of the primitive church which
collapsed in 1806, enlarged in 1964, is distinguished by the presence of two steeples: the first
one Romanesque, the other from 1800 with a square base finishing in a copper sphere. No-
table the baptismal font (1573) made out of grey and pink marble from Melezet and decorated
with the crests of Bardonecchia, the Dauphin and the engraved fleur de lis of France. The al-
tarpiece (retable), presents four spiral columns which unravels a vine branch, and two lateral
nooks containing the statues of Saints. The altar step, sculptured in bas-relief presents three
scenes from Christ’s Passion, appears to be one of the few works of polychrome wood carving.
The Museo Civico. Showing four halls fitted out from the 1800 town hall, inside one finds an
exhibition of objects of daily use.
The Sundials. The most noticeable of these, on Casa Allemand, quoting the motto ‘Soleum
regula mea’. Another is found upon Casa Pellerin, showing the writings ‘Ombra son del sole
figlia’. The third is found upon the frontage of Casa Ambrois and reads ‘Vulnerant omnes, ulti-
ma necat’. Lastly the inscription of the fourth meridian upon Casa Ambrois-Clovis, reads ‘Labor
    si sole patet’.
Antique castles. The Bramafam ones, and that of the Dauphin’s era of the ‘Signoria di De
Bardonisca’, remembered as Tur d’Amun. To mention also the Forte Bramafam, constructed
between 1874 and 1889, built to protect the mouth of the Fréjus tunnel. During the I World
War it served as a concentration camp and in 1993 it was decided to turn it into a museum.
